9 quick steps to winterproof your garden

Winter is coming. And with less daylight and energy to spend outside, it’s easy to let your garden maintenance fall by the wayside.

Don’t let the big freeze ruin all your hard work! If you start preparing your garden for winter now, it’ll be lush and green when spring rolls around.

So, pop on your wellies and let’s get to it.

1. Check for wildlife

First step, and it's the best of the lot: checking for furry friends. Before getting started on the garden, give your cheeky visitors a spot to hibernate by leaving a woodpile or leaves in a space you can monitor.

2. Get rid of compost and rubbish

After months spent fermenting in the winter damp, you won’t want it near your car come spring!

Once you’ve cleared your garden, you’ll need to scarify your lawn to keep it in tip-top shape. Need a hand? Check out our Scarifying A-Z here.

3. Stock up on seeds

Plan now if you’re thinking of planting any shrubs, flowers or vegetables next year – it’s never too early. Grab your seed supplies and do some research during winter to get the best out of your soil in spring. Remember, you reap what you sow.

4. Clean and store your garden tools

Clean your gardening tools before storing them away for their well-earned winter break. No one wants rusty tools come spring.

5. Invest in a weatherproof shed

If your shed isn’t weatherproof, consider one that is – because rain, wind and slow will rust your tools fast.

If you have lots of garden gadgets, pop some tarp over them for extra protection before sealing and lining the shed.

6. Trim the hedges

Trim any bushes and plants so they don’t go wild during the cold snap. This prepares your garden for winter, but also saves you a mammoth task when the weather warms up. Garden sheers will do the trick, but a high-tech hedge trimmer will make life a lot easier.

7. Aerate the soil

Once you’ve cut your plants down to size, turn the soil over to kickstart the organic breakdown of plant tissue. This aerates the soil and prepares your lawn for scarifying.

8. Clear away dead leaves

Left to their own devices, dead leaves cause problems – from blocking guttering to inhibiting lawn growth. Trade your rake in for a leaf blower: much quicker and actually pretty fun. They’re not all about blowing leaves either; here are six uses that make them true garden greats.

9. Protect your plants

Strong winds can severely damage new and fragile plants. Fortunately, artificial screens do an excellent job of keeping gales at bay.

But if you can’t bear to leave them outside, bring them in before the temperature dips below 10°C. This moderate temperature shift will help your plants acclimatise and reduce yellow, dropped leaves.

So, there you have it: nine easy steps to prep your garden for winter. Before you know it, you’ll be knee-deep in our summer garden prep guide!
