5 Tips For Winterproofing Your Garden (Or Prepping For The British Summer)

While the cold wind coming in might be making summer feel a long way away, the colder weather doesn’t mean your garden has to be out of action. With the last year’s various lockdowns and shutdowns, we’ve never been more attached to our gardens, all craving our own patch of outdoor space and fresh air. So whatever the weather, you don’t have to let go of your days in the garden and nights dining al fresco. As a perfect way to socialise from a safe distance, we’ve got some tips to keep your garden in business whatever the weather, and help you stay outdoors year round.

#1 Stay Ready

If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. It’s always better to be prepared and think ahead when it comes to your garden, otherwise you’ll constantly be running round drying seats and trying to save furniture that’s been sacrificed to the rain. Knowing you’ll definitely have a dry seat to sit on is sure to get you into the garden the second the sky is clears, so getting some garden furniture covers is one of the best things you can do to weatherproof your outdoor space. Protecting your outdoor furniture and décor, and keeping everything dry and ready.

#2 Shelter From The Storm

With a new appreciation for outdoor space, now is the time to invest in some long term garden shelter! A sheltered arbour is an ideal way to weather-proof your garden, giving you a cosy covered seat to enjoy whatever the weather. Add a cushion in summer or grab a blanket for autumn, and enjoy afternoons spent socialising or reading in the garden. Built to last, building permanent shelter is going to level up your outdoor space for years to come, meaning you can go out and enjoy a morning coffee in the fresh air any day without having to consider the weather. Practical and super cute, a cottage arbour is ideal for adding seating and shelter.

#3 Warm Up

Sometimes a jumper just won’t cut it, and the thought of having to put on your big coat might put you off taking to the garden with a cuppa and a book. So why not invest in some garden heat. If you have a patio, you can attach an easy patio heater to warm up your outdoor space.

But we’re big fans of a fire pit! Giving you plenty of heat, a fire pit also makes a beautiful feature and centre piece for your garden. For BBQ fans, you can also use a fire pit in place of a barbeque for al fresco dining. Cosy winter nights around the fire? Sounds perfect to us.

#4 Let There Be Light

On grey days, never underestimate the power of some fairy lights. Brightening up your garden and giving it a little extra sparkle, adding some lighting and decoration to your outdoor space is an easy way to fight off the winter gloom. With some twinkly lights shining, fire pit burning and cosy chairs to sit on, your garden can remain your favourite place all year round. Why not also add a mirror or some wall art, this will not only look beautiful, but help the light bounce all the way round the garden.

#5 Keep Your Green-Fingers

There’s still plenty to do in the garden over winter, and your green space doesn’t have to fade to grey and dull. Prepare ahead of time by making sure to plant some evergreen additions in summer. As well as being great for adding some structure to your space, evergreen plants and shrubs come to life in winter, adding some much needed colour and flowering. You can also add in some winter flowers that will add a sweet scent. You could also make the most of a greenhouse, helping you enjoy some greenery, and grow and maintain plants while protecting them from the seasons.

Alternatively, why not help out the wildlife and add some feeders to your garden, then settle down in your space to watch your new friends.
