How To Get The Perfect Summer Garden In 3 Weeks

If your lawn is looking a little lifeless, there’s still plenty of time to get it ready for a season’s worth of fun in the sun.

In fact, spring is the perfect time for grass to grow, so putting the work in now can result in seriously luscious summer lawn.

Ready to get started?

Step 1: Remove moss

In order to set solid foundations for a healthy lawn to grow, it’s important to completely kill any moss and weeds that could threaten the future of your lawn.

Firstly, use a VonHaus Lawn Rake to remove any large debris such as leaves and branches.

Then, apply a weed and moss killer treatment to your lawn. There are many varieties of these treatments available, so just follow the instructions for the one you choose.

Once the treatment is complete, re-rake your lawn again to remove the remaining organic detritus.

It’s important to note that the weed-killing process can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the treatment you choose. If you don’t think you’ll have time to squeeze this step in, it’s not absolutely essential - but neglecting to do so could leave you with a weed or moss problem later on down the line!

Step 2: Mow

Now that you’ve got a weed-free lawn, it’s time to mow the existing grass down to a shallow enough level for the new seeds to reach the soil.

To do this, mow your lawn on its lowest setting, taking care to collect and remove the cuttings along the way. With the VonHaus 1600W Lawn Mower, the cutting height can be set anywhere from 2.5cm to 7.5cm for total flexibility, while the 50L detachable collection box makes depositing your trimmings easy!

Step 3: Scarification

Just like skin needs to be exfoliated in order to breathe and stay healthy, so does your lawn.

Over time, the soil in your lawn accumulates deeply embedded organic matter (such as leaves, twigs, dead grass and overcrowded grass roots) that mesh together to form a difficult to penetrate layer of thatch, which prevents water from draining properly.

If water can’t drain properly, air and nutrients won’t be distributed effectively enough for grass to grow healthily. Worse still, waterlogging can encourage the growth of mould!

By scarifying (or dethatching) your lawn, you loosen up this layer of thatch and soil to create a properly aerated area for new seeds to be planted and healthy growth to occur.

While it’s possible to use a rake to scarify your lawn, we’d recommend using an electric VonHaus Lawn Rake & Scarifier.

Step 4: Reseed

Now that your lawn is free of weeds and freshly loosened, it’s time to plant some seeds.

There are many varieties of grass seeds available, varying in strength, colour, germination speed and structure. Ideally, if you can determine what kind of grass you already have, buy a seed mix to match it. Otherwise, have fun deciding which kind of grass you’d like on your lawn!

To plant your seeds, simply scatter them as evenly as possible in parallel rows across the entire area of your lawn. Once the whole area is covered, repeat the process one more time to ensure full coverage, before raking the seeds lightly to cover them in a thin layer of soil.

Tip: Be sure to use a comfortable garden kneeler to protect your joints when gardening.

Step 5: Nurture

With your seeds properly planted, all you’ve got to do is water your lawn lightly twice a day with a VonHaus 30M Hose Reel if the weather is hot and dry! If it rains, then nature has done the hard work for you.

Depending on the variety of seed you chose, you can expect them to germinate within 5 to 30 days.

Once you begin to see grass sprouting, this is the time to sprinkle some fertiliser onto your lawn to promote even more healthy grass growth.

Before long, you’ll have a thick, luscious lawn to enjoy over summer!
