How to Throw a Platinum Jubilee Party on a Budget

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee takes place from 2-5th June, honouring dear Lilibet’s 70 years on the throne.

To celebrate, Britain will screech to a halt to fete our longest-reigning monarch’s astonishing reign.

Plus, we all get an extra bank holiday to limbo on down with Lizzie – who’d have thought it?!

In true, or quintessential, British style, there’ll be roaring street parties, patriotic bunting, and of course – plenty of Pimm’s.

Official Jubilee events are organised all over the country, but for those sticking to invite-only, we’ve prepared 15 platinum-grade party ideas that won’t break the bank.

We’ll start with tableware and Jubilee food ideas, before showing you how to create your own Platinum Jubilee decorations – all on a pauper’s budget!

So, dig out your finest china (or paper plates!) and prepare to get your Platinum Jubilee party in full swing.

After you, Ma’am.

How to create a Platinum Jubilee tablescape

Tablescaping (a fancy way of saying dressing your table) can transform a humdrum dinner into a breath-taking event.

To perfect your Platinum Jubilee tableware, start by picking your colours.

Red, white and blue are traditional fare, but the Jubilee’s official colours (purple and white) offer longevity rivalling Elizabeth’s, so they’ll crown your tablescape for future soirées.

Texture: All the feels

Take inspiration from the traditional street party aesthetic by layering textures – think crisp white linens adoring natural materials like wood and stoneware. This will create a rustic, homespun look with a touch of regal elegance.

Or, if you’re hosting a Jubilee picnic, grab a waterproof picnic blanket and do lunch on your lawn or in your local park.

We’ve got a vast selection of super-soft picnic blankets, catering for regal tastes and those a little more free-spirited à la Princess Margaret.

Fresh flowers and satin ribbons create texture, too, softening your table’s rigid lines with their delicate, flowing shapes.

But if you’d rather your table evoked rustic vibes all year round without tablescaping, a live edge dining table is your best bet.

Patriotic petals

June is high season for some splendid spring flowers – and they’re perfect for embellishing your Jubilee tablescape.

The St. George’s cross forms the basis for the Union Jack and the city flag of London, so if you’ve got some red and white flowers on hand, arrange them in a cross shape on the table for a less gaudy show of patriotism.

Royal aromas

Often overlooked, a calming, subtle scent will add to the sensory experience, subtle being the operative word.

Pop some freshly sliced lemons in each glass for a soft citrussy summer scent, or tuck some fresh herbs in your napkins for something more earthy and aromatic.

And when the sun drops to the horizon, light some scented candles to smooth the fragrant transition from dining to dancing – we’ll leave this one up to you!

Platinum Jubilee food ideas

It's not a royal celebration without decadent dishes and a bit of bubbly!

So, pile your bowls high with scones, jam, and cream, and pop a wine cooler and ice bucket at each end of the table to keep the all-important fizz chilled.

Here are some quintessentially British dishes ideal for your Jubilee party:

Coronation chicken

A sandwich filling staple, coronation chicken is a delicious curried chicken dish served for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

Platinum Pudding is a lemon Swiss roll and Amaretto trifle inspired by the lemon posset served at the Queen's wedding to Prince Philip.

Its creator, Jemma Melvin, scooped the top prize at the recent Platinum Pudding Competition with the scrumptious sweet, and here’s how to make it for just £1.56 per head.

As quintessentially British as snacks come – tea and biscuits! Serve your favourite British teas alongside assorted nibbles – think bite-sized sandwiches, cakes, scones, and pastries.

And if it’s a balmy bank holiday (here’s hoping!), why not serve iced tea, or our favourite: boozy peach iced tea?

Serve in some elegant glassware or a quirky gin tea set to fuse two great British treats: afternoon tea and a cheeky tipple!

When it comes to your Platinum Jubilee food, make the cake your centrepiece.

Displayed on an elegant cake stand, it’ll showcase your cooking – or shop-bought buying(!) – skills and give your guests a feast for the eyes before it’s anywhere near their plate!

But if you’re not sold on Platinum Pudding, grab some in-season fruits like strawberries and blueberries for a showstopping cheesecake that’ll boost your Jubilee theme.

You could also whip up a batch of biscuits and ice them with colours that complement your Jubilee tablescape. Then place each biscuit in a cellophane bag before wrapping each one with a red, white and blue ribbon for a crowning touch.

Platinum Jubilee decorations

Here are some platinum jubilee decoration ideas sure to get everyone in a jubilant mood, whether you’re toasting Elizabeth with your inner circle or having a royal knees-up with the neighbours!

As the purse strings are tight for all of us, we’ve focused on homemade Jubilee decorations you can make with some old bits and bobs.

Great British bunting

Nothing says British street party like Union Jack bunting. But the red, white and blue can be tricky to style if you’re keeping everything cohesive.

Fortunately, the Platinum Jubilee’s purple and white colour scheme stretches the style spectrum, so you can add earthy shades to complement those regal hues.

How to make bunting

Making bunting with the kids is a wonderful Platinum Jubilee craft idea and gets the kids involved in the festivities.

Here’s a simple method to make bunting without breaking the bank:

Cut triangles from an old tablecloth/tea towel, scrap fabric, a spool of lace, or any other fabric lying around the house.

Use a hole punch to make two holes through the two top corners.

String a piece of twine or ribbon through the holes and hang it up.

Voilà! Budget-friendly bunting in an instant, you crafty so and so ;)

How to make pom poms

Tissue pom poms and paper pinwheels can be draped over trees, mantles, or the shed in a flash.

You could buy them premade, but this is another chance to get creative and save the pennies.

To make your own pom poms, fold a stack of tissue paper accordion style, tie a string around the middle, and carefully lift each sheet upwards to form a ball shape. It’s that easy!

The little things, those heartfelt details, catapult a so-so soirée into a swinging shindig.

Here are some Platinum jubilee craft ideas that, while small and budget-friendly, will reign supreme in your guests’ memories:

  • Wrap royal-themed paper strips around the labels of your drinks bottles and add a nametag for each guest.
  • If it’s an intimate gathering, fill plain glass bottles with each guest’s favourite tipple for a personal touch.
  • Serve drinks with paper straws with small Union flag cut-outs.
