Creative storage ideas for small homes

It's always helpful to find creative and efficient storage solutions for your belongings, especially as the Christmas period winds down and you need to put away your decorations and even hide some unwanted presents. Whether it’s new shelves for the shed or garage to carry your new power tools, or a bike storage kit to hang up your new bikes, we’ve got some great ideas for you as well as some excellent solutions here at VonHaus.

Here are our top tips for finding creative storage solutions throughout the house, to help you organise your home and utilise some creative home organisation hacks.

How to organise your home

By now we’ve all heard of Marie Kondo’s method of tidying as you go and making sure everything has its place. Now whilst tidying as we go can be a little bit tricky (we’ve got busy lives!), ensuring that everything you own has its designated place in the home can help a lot with keeping everything organised. So, we took this idea and came up with some home organisation tips you can use to ensure that everything has a set location in your home.

Home organisation hacks

  1. Take an inventory of everything you have - decide whether you want to keep, toss, or donate the items. Having a big clear-out is a sure-fire way to help organise your things, as you’ll finally have a handle on what you own.
  2. Next, place like with like – there’s no point having your socks spread out over different drawers or having some coats in the hallway cupboard and some upstairs in the wardrobe. It’s best to put everything in one place, as you’ll find it a lot easier to put that thing back in with the rest when you’re finished with it.
  3. Label everything – you might not be the only person in your house, and sometimes our organisation may not be the clearest to the rest of the family! So, putting some labels on boxes and drawers can help your loved ones follow your new system.
  4. Figure out what storage solutions you are missing – now that you know exactly where you want things to go and how much you have, you can get round to sorting out some storage solutions and hacks!

Creative storage ideas

  • Move around the books in your bookcase to make room for some decorative boxes which can double as more storage – perfect for hiding the TV remotes, the kids’ toys, and general living room clutter. You’ll increase the likelihood of putting things away if there’s a storage solution in the same room.
  • Invest in an ottoman that can double up as both a coffee table and a storage solution, and even a spare seating option when needed.
  • Wall-mounted bedside lamps help to free up space on your bedside table for all the important clutter you just can’t live without
  • If you’re not fussed about hiding your household items, then consider open storage, such as baskets attached to the side of your kitchen counters to hold reusable bags or cooking equipment.

Efficient storage ideas

Not only is creativity important when it comes to storage solutions, but efficiency is another top reason to look more carefully at how you are organising your home. Here are our top efficient storage ideas for you to try in your home:

  • Double-use furniture is one of the most efficient storage hacks out there, for example a bookcase that can turn into a desk, or storage stools that double as both storage bins and seats for the kids. Our favourite is bunk beds, like the VonHaus Pine Study Desk Bunk Bed.
  • Another great hack is a bed with under mattress storage – there is so much room taken up in your bedroom by your bed, so why not fill up the space underneath it with spare bedding, clothes or just clutter that would otherwise take up your living space.
  • Build shelves above your radiators to create more room for decorations that are taking over your mantlepiece or tables.
  • Opt for square storage containers over round containers, as they stack together better and are more efficient for tight spaces.

Small home storage ideas

When it comes to tiny homes, you need to be on your a-game when it comes to creative and efficient storage hacks! Try these incredibly innovative home small home storage ideas to make the most of your space:

  • If you can find hooks and baskets that clip onto the inside of your cabinets, you can really maximise your storage space whilst keeping everything tidy.
  • Opt for open shelving rather than bulky cabinets in a small kitchen – you can see everything, and keep items stacked together for good organisation.
  • Create a cupboard in the dead space that lies between the fridge and the wall to store all your tins and spices – this is a great space saver, and you can see all your tins and spices in one go which makes cooking much more efficient too!
  • Use dish drying racks to stack your baking dishes, cutting boards and pans to create more space in your cupboards.

So, whether you have a teeny tiny house that you need some creative storage solutions for, or you have plenty of room but just need to get more organised, these home storage ideas should hopefully help you figure it out!
