What is feng shui?

Feng shui is a Chinese concept, with the two words literally translated as ‘wind’ and ‘water’. The practice involves arranging your living space in such a way that you’re harnessing a clear flow of positive energy. Feng shui design in the bedroom helps to create a harmonious and balanced environment that makes it easier to relax.

Feng shui bedroom layout

Feng shui is all about the way you arrange your space, which means it’s crucially important to think about your furniture layout and design. Find out some of the basic bedroom feng shui techniques you can follow.

Where should you place your bed?

When planning your bedroom layout, an important consideration is to position your bed in a commanding position where it’s the central focus. This is typically against a back wall with plenty of space both either side and at the foot. However, there are some other things to consider:

  • Avoid positioning your bed against a wall that has a bathroom or toilet on the other side.
  • Avoid positioning your bed directly opposite your bedroom door (and bathroom door if you have an en suite).
  • Avoid positioning your bed underneath a sloping ceiling or low beams.

How many bedside tables should you have?

Ideally, if your bedroom’s big enough, you’ll have positioned your bed to fit a bedside table either side. It’s important to have two, to not only improve practicality and provide additional storage space, but also to enhance bedroom symmetry. Having furniture either side of your bed will also help to establish balance between you and your partner.

Can you have a bedroom mirror?

For good feng shui, a mirror in the bedroom should be avoided, as it’s believed that they contribute to restlessness and interrupted relaxation. This is because they’re thought to erratically reflect and bounce energy, which disrupts flow.

Instead, find a gorgeous mirror for your landing or hallway; but if you do require a mirror in your bedroom, though, avoid hanging or leaning it directly opposite your bed, to give you the best chance at a good night’s sleep.

Can you work in your bedroom?

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, so there’s an important rule to avoid bad feng shui: a bedroom with desk, laptop, and piling work will be a disruptive presence. Not only will you find it harder to relax on an evening, with your work in sight, but you’ll also find it more difficult to focus and stay alert at your desk during the day.

Feng Shui bedroom tips

Now that you know the basics of how to layout your space, we’ve outlined the feng shui bedroom rules to follow, to ensure a positive flow of energy.

1. Declutter your bedroom

Because feng shui is about clean harmony and balance, it’s important to ensure your bedroom is clutter-free. In particular, check underneath your bed, to establish a clear pathway for positive energy flow; this will improve sleep and rest. But if you do choose to use the space underneath your bed for storage, you’re better off sticking to bedding, pillows, and blankets.

2. Consider your bedroom artwork carefully

Feng shui design suggests that the artwork you choose to hang in your bedroom should be selected based on your own personal circumstances. For instance, if you’re looking for love, avoid paintings or prints that symbolise loneliness or solitude. Alternatively, if you’re looking to refresh romance, consider soft floral imagery.

3. Give your bed a headboard

Headboards represent stability and strength, which makes them the perfect finishing touch to your bed. But it’s important to choose something solid, as bars can give the feeling of being imprisoned.

4. Limit your electronic devices

Using electronic devices late at night is proven to disrupt your sleep pattern, as a result of the blue light emitted. But this isn’t the only reason why it’s important to limit scrolling before bed; because feng shui is orientated around the natural world, have a detrimental effect on overall relaxation.

5. Avoid synthetic bedding

Eco-friendly bedding can help to improve comfort, by regulating temperature and moisture levels as you sleep. But not only this; reducing the amount of synthetic materials will help to improve bedroom feng shui.

As such, it’s important to ensure your bedding is made from natural resources, such as cotton, linen, and even bamboo. These are all also hypoallergenic, which makes them a practical solution if you’re particularly susceptible to dust-triggered-sneezing.

6. Choose softer shades

When considering bedroom feng shui interior design, it’s important to pick muted colours that help to send you off into a soothing slumber. This will help to establish harmony, and reduce the number of distractions or points of conflict within your space. But this doesn’t mean you can’t inject a little colour into your space; just think soft pastel shades like light blues and pinks.

7. Avoid big lighting

An important aspect of feng shui design is creating a soft ambience that facilitates relaxation. So consider the benefits of swapping out your bold central lighting for something less bright like low-light bulbs or even candles. Not only will this help to establish balance, but it’ll also ensure calmness and a better night’s sleep.

8. Only keep your current reads to hand

Having several books piled high can disrupt the balance of your bedroom, and become a distracting presence when you’re trying to relax on an evening. Additionally, they easily attract dust, which can negatively impact your space. Instead, keep just the book or literature you’re currently reading neatly on your bedside table.

9. Consider the benefits of adjustable blinds

Maximise bedroom feng shui and ensure your space is always well-ventilated, by installing easily-adjustable blinds. These allow you to avoid glare while also allowing the outside air inside. This can go a long way towards making your space feel fresher, which will accommodate easier relaxation.

10. Greenery gives life to your bedroom

Plants signify health, so can be a great addition if you’re trying to improve your bedroom feng shui. They’re also a simple way to add a little vibrancy. It can also be helpful to place one pot on either side of your bed, to enhance overall harmony. Just be wary of the temperature of your bedroom, to allow your greenery to thrive.
