How to make a small bedroom look bigger

When you’re living in the box room, it can be difficult to figure out how to make the most of such a small space. You could go the expensive route of getting custom-made furniture to fit the space, but that can get very costly, so it’s worth look exploring other avenues of how you can make your small bedroom look bigger.

We have lots of tricks and tips for a small bedroom that you want to make appear larger, from how and where to place your bed, to which colour schemes work best in small places – we have all the small bedroom inspiration you need!

How to maximise space in a small bedroom

There are a few different ways you can make a small bedroom look bigger, the most crucial of which is minimising the amount of stuff in the room! If you have clothes piled all over the place because you can’t pack any more into your wardrobe, consider having a clear-out and getting down to the essentials and your favourite pieces.

You can also make sure you don’t try to make too much furniture into one space – one of our top small bedroom tips is to opt for a wall-mounted TV over taking up space on top of your dresser or desk – this space can be much better utilised for storing pieces you want quick access to. When it comes to the bedroom furniture you have left, we’ve got some great ideas of how you can arrange it to make the most of your available space.

How to arrange bedroom furniture to make it look bigger

We’ve all heard of feng shui – the art of arranging your furniture to create balance with the natural world – but did you know that putting it into practice in your space can be a time and energy saver? Instead of lugging all the bits of furniture around your room until you find something that works, think about the flow of your room, where the light comes in, where you need access to a desk or doors.

So don’t go placing your tall wardrobe in front of the window, as this will block all the light from getting in, and don’t put your bed at such an angle that you can barely open your bedroom door! If your room is excessively small, you may need to make some compromises to make the room work with what furniture you have (make the most of clever storage solutions!) but for the most part, you should be able to arrange your furniture to match the flow of your movements.

Painting a small bedroom to make it look bigger

Another way you can make a small room look bigger is to change up the paint colours. It’s a known fact that darker colours make a room feel smaller and cosier, which is great if you have a large room with little furniture in it to make the room feel less bare, but that’s not what we’re after.

You don’t have to compromise on not using your favourite colours if you do love darker shades like grey, black, or navy blue, you just need to use them strategically!

What colours make a small bedroom look bigger?

The obvious first candidate for colours that make a small bedroom look bigger is white – simple and clean, it makes a great canvas to hang artwork, shelving with plants or a collage of photographs. This allows you to create focal points on your walls, which draws the eye and creates the illusion of your walls being more expansive than they are. Mixing white with natural greens and woods can also bring that sense of feng-shui and instinctive flow to your room.

Light shades of green and blue also lend well to the practice of feng-shui as well, as they are calming colours that work well with elemental additions such as wooden furniture and floors, plants, and minimalist artwork.

Taupe and ochre are warmer shades that can make a small bedroom look bigger with their warmth and depth – paired with stark white bedsheets and colourful pillows and artwork, you can create a tropical oasis from your small bedroom that feels decadent and spacious with little effort.
