Gin cocktail recipes to create at home

Is a dinner party ever complete without some amazing homemade cocktails to sip on? Gin is having a big moment right now, and there are so many wonderful flavours – including some infusions we would never have thought of – both big and small brands, and types of gin to try, from sloe gin to London dry gin. So, why not combine some of your favourite gins in an amazing cocktail to share with your guests?

We’ve got five of our favourite gin-based cocktail recipes to share with you, and to help you find inspiration, we’ve even thrown in some seasonal surprises to ensure that you never have to go without ideas for fun gin cocktail ideas. Let’s shake things up!

Best gin cocktails to make ahead of time

When it comes to the best gin cocktails, you always have to start with a classic G&T. The traditional ice and slice method was first coined in Barcelona and has been transformed in recent years to include some fantastic variations. Try this twist on an old classic:

Sloe gin

Sloe by name, slow by nature: this gin takes a little time to make but will be so worth it when you do.

  1. Start with 500g of sloes – these should be rinsed then wiped with a clean tea towel. Take a fork or cocktail stick and prick the sloe berries. Add them to a 2-litre glass jar or split them between two smaller jars.
  2. Seal the jar after adding 250g of golden caster sugar and 1 litre of your favourite dry gin and shake well. Shake the jar once a day for seven days. For the next two to three months, store the jar in a cool, dark place.
  3. Set a plastic sieve over a bowl and line the sieve with muslin. Strain the sloe gin through this sieve. Pour into clean, dry bottles, then label and seal. Ideally, make the gin one year in advance so that it can improve and mature over time.

When you’re ready to drink, combine with a smooth lemon tonic and zest of lemon for a delicious long-awaited treat.

Gin and tonic sorbet

This sugary summer treat is best enjoyed with plenty of sunshine and a BBQ sizzling away in the background.

  1. Add 400g caster sugar to 400ml water in a pan and heat on a low setting until dissolved. Increase the heat and boil for 1 min. Take the pan off the heat and let it cool.
  2. Stir together 400ml of tonic water and the sugar syrup you made earlier, and place in the fridge until chilled.
  3. Add 4 tablespoons of gin, 1 lime, and 1 lemon zest and juice into the cooled tonic mix. Pour into a container and freeze for 2 hours or until just frozen.
  4. Break up the just-frozen sorbet with a fork after removing it from the freezer. Using a fork, break up one egg white, then add both to the food processor and blitz, ensuring it doesn’t melt. Return the frozen mixture to the container and freeze until it’s solid. On a tray, freeze extra lemons and lime slices until solid. With the frozen lemon and lime slices on top, serve the sorbet in glasses or small bowls. Be sure to place an ice bucket nearby for extra crushed ice!

Easy gin cocktails

Looking for something easier to make than waiting a year for some sloe gin? Try one of these quick, crowd-pleasing recipes:

Posh G&T

Take your G&T to the next level with this recipe for a ‘posh’ gin cocktail.

  1. Take a vibrant, citrussy gin like Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla or Silent Pool Rare Citrus Gin and add a tablespoon of sweet vermouth in a large gin glass.
  2. Add a large dash of peach bitters to the gin.
  3. Top up with your choice of tonic (we’d recommend a Mediterranean tonic) to the level you find it most palatable and garnish with luscious seasonal berries.

Bramble gin

This gin is always a favourite in the summer months when local berries can be picked for your drinks – plus it is so refreshing that your guests won’t be able to get enough of it on a sunny day!

  1. Tip 40ml of gin, 20ml of sugar syrup and 20ml of lemon juice into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.
  2. Pour the cocktail mixture into a glass filled with crushed ice, and drizzle over 10ml crème de mure. Garnish with fresh summer berries and serve.

Martini

We’ve all heard of the classic ‘shaken not stirred’ martini method, but why not try this simple gin cocktail recipe at your next dinner date or classy soiree?

  1. Stir 60ml gin with as much dry vermouth you like: the more you use the more herbal it will be. Stir until diluted to your taste.
  2. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel.
